Philosophy of Education

"Education refers to change; No one is educated who stays just as he was." -E. Thorndike

Teacher asks 1: What changes to make
2: How to make those changes
ie: farmer educated in botany & chemistry = more successful
teacher who understands psychology of the students will fare better

Reading: The Little Boy by Helen Buckley- What do we want our students to know/learn

Philosophy fyi:

*Interesting side point, grades are fixed when the rest of science and discovery is constantly changing and in the hypothesis stage

Curious Teachers... make the best way to enjoy life
Are we still asking questions and then seeking to find the answers= creating a continuous education. why are lips pink? or why does it help your hair grow faster to cut of the ends every 5 weeks?
-essay contests

Teach Self Reliance

Theories of Teaching
What man is:
a) Ball of Clay: how should we shape and mold it
b) Man is an acorn seed: plant it in a rich environment and it grows

b) Man is like a seed
-Look at dedicatory prayer for the Mckay building
-Stretch ourselves

When the Student is Ready the Teacher Will Come
-Check out SummerHill School- contemplate moral concerns, productivity, ect

*how were philosophers ideas impacted by their life and experiences?

Goal of School Verses Goal of Education- are they the same?
-teach the skills and knowledge from which students can become self reliant contributors to society. Where they can provide for themselves, family, and perhaps others. "Give them the situation and let them work it out for themselves."
"Living that's important; a chance to become balanced, sincere people."

What constitutes a really good education & what am I willing to compromise on?

What would I do without school?

Points of interest:
reformed egyptian= look up alphabet origins
gifted and talented spin: create new alphabet name and pronunciation

Understand the Constitution (see Dr. Scott Farrin)
freedomforum.org = teaching religion in schools = How to be respectful in school
Utah: RZ77-105-8 (Z might be 2) Expressions of Personal Belief by Employees

Cyber Bullying
Get involved with the principal to Act and Stop It

How to Report
Child Abuse:
Report to police officer or/and DCFS orally and take written receipt
On Educators:
Verbal and written report to principal

Over report is better than less

42USC's 1983 -after civil war
                         - If you act under color of state law, if you deprive someone of their constitutional
rights, you can directly be sued as a person
What falls under that:
-Freedom of Speech and Expression & Religion

Qualified Immunity -If your actions are in accordance to mainstream understanding
                                -acting under old law
Reasonable Suspicion= can be used in school setting. Must have individualize (one person) suspicion.

Parent Volunteers= need background checks

Good precautions to take in school:
-Doors/ windows open
-Camera in Classroom

Report in good faith for good reason- mandated report-
Child abuse signs: dog dies, emotional change, clothes=smelling dirty or old, afraid to go in & come out of a bathroom, bruises

FYI trivia
School funding- comes from property taxes = often wealthier areas have less children

Reading: Savage Inequalities

Goal: see the vision for teaching= have a visual reminder
Why are you a teacher? What do you want to achieve as a teacher?
